State of Play comments, day 1
You’ll see a lot of coverage of State of Play on other blogs, like the Terra Nova blog. However, I’ll be posting some of my thoughts and observations over the next few days. Here’s some thoughts from day 1, Sunday, August 19, 2007.
The first day was relatively light. For many attendees, this was good, given the time zone differences and jet lag after long flights. The dinner was a good opportunity to meet people and get updates from various areas. I also got to meet the organizers of the Virtual Worlds Forum coming up in London, and Virtual Worlds Fall in San Jose. Both sound like great events.
At the last State of Play, some of the most popular topics were taxation and virtual property ownership. One theme that emerged from conversations with people this year is transfer of assets between worlds. There are a lot of anecdotes floating about people who invested significant time in worlds, and accumulated a lot of assets, whether gold, virtual items, or just experience points and levels. Then, for whatever reason, those players want to move on to another world, or are forced to. Does the player get to take their experience or assets with them? The answer has been no for all worlds and all cases I know of to date.
The final piece of the day was to view a pre-release version of the Ideal World documentary. The movie deals with some of the early days of Second Life, and particularly the experience of a few people in-world.
